Throughout the world, the long White Cane is used by people who are blind or visually impaired as a tool for safe and reliable navigation. The white cane is a symbol of the user’s skills and talents, mobility and independence. It also allows the sighted person to recognize that the user is visually impaired.
International White Cane Safety Day (October 15th) gives Lions an opportunity to increase awareness of the white cane and safety for the blind. Oklahoma Lions have traditionally observed White Cane in April.
Recently, the Lawton Noon, Leo’s and Patriots clubs received publicity in cooperation with the Lawton Council for the Blind for their work in public awareness. As a result, they have received donations and eye glasses for recycling. The Lawton Leo's made and handed out small canes & information for public distribution. These are also extended to YOUR CLUBS to support OLSF and the Lawton Leos. These young Lions need to raise money to attend the Centenniel Celebration in Chicago Ill..
The Oklahoma Lions Service Foundation strives to bring awareness to fellow Oklahomans regarding the issues visually impaired individuals face as well as raise funds to support Oklahoma Lions vision programs. This year we are raising funds for the new equipment needed by the OK Lions Eye Bank for the DSEK process. Please consider supporting your Lions State projects and assisting these young Leos with a vision for increasing Lions across Oklahoma! This is our Oklahoma’s Future!
The Mission Statement says a lot about an organization. Just like the motto: “We Serve” tells the public what Lions do, the mission states why we exist.
In 2015 the Board got together and decided to amend the mission to include other charitable services such as, to aid local Lions Clubs projects and the Mobile Health Screening Unit. The mission was to be broad enough to expand and help even more communities. The current mission statement is:
“The Foundation's mission is to provide support and services for Lions Clubs of Oklahoma charitable and benevolent services."
